Why elementary school counselors?
It is very important to have elementary school counselors. Many times teachers are busy doing their own work and teaching their class. Teachers most of the time don't have time to get to know each of their students. It is very important to listen to your students because sometimes they really need someone to listen to them. By providing education prevention early identification, and intervention, school counselors can help elementary students achieve academic success. School counselors work with, teachers and parents in order to create a caring climate and atmosphere.

I think you are right, schools do need counselors. I would hope it isn't because the teachers do not know their students, but more as a second step if the teacher notices an issue that may need to be addressed more deeply than the teacher is able to assist. Students need this resource available to them. Often times they have no one they can talk to, and a counselor can be a good way for them to do this.
